The prestigious Animal Talk “Top Dog” Veterinary Excellence Award for 2017 was awarded to a Hartbeespoort veterinarian, Dr Le-anne Kleynhans, owner of the Broederstroom Veterinary Clinic.

Dr Le-anne received the award for various reasons which included veterinary excellence, her love and compassion for animals and the large amount of community and welfare projects she is involved in.
As the owner of both the Broederstroom Veterinary Clinic in Hartbeespoort Dam and the Bromhof Veterinary Clinic in Randburg, she works incredibly hard and dedicates personal resources and time to community projects such as working with Animal Allies to treat and sterilise dogs and cats in Katlehong and Zandspruit. Together they have sterilised over 600 animals in the last two years, all at no charge to the public. She also does work for Boston Terrier Rescue and Border Collie Rescue. Once a year, she takes a team to a remote area of Lesotho for an outreach project to treat animals and do veterinary work as well as support a local orphanage there. She is also involved in the management of a team in the process of establishing a village in Lanseria for orphaned and vulnerable children.
Dr Le-anne and the Broederstroom Veterinary Clinic team have also recently started a partnership with the Vulture Rescue centre, VulPro and do surgical repairs on wing and leg fractures, giving the vultures a chance to be released into the wild again

Drs Dylan Dukas and David Clarke moved to Fish Hoek in August 2007 and aquired Glencairn Veterinary Clinic and Kommetjie Veterinary Consulting Room. Both these vets are commited to client service and offering the very best medical and surgical care for their patients. David Clarke has a wealth of experience running a multi-vet referral hospital in the UK and has a special interest in cat medicine. Dylan Dukas returned to South Africa after gaining invaluble experience working in the UK for 5 years. Dylan has a post graduate certificate in Small Animal (Dogs and Cats) Medicine but also enjoys surgery.

Although dogs, cats and horses comprise the majority of our patients, we have treated a wide variety of other animals including, birds, cheetahs, elephants, lions, rhinos, snakes, and tigers.

Our Gauteng hospital is situated in Fourways, Johannesburg and our Western Cape hospital is in Panorama, Cape Town. We also consult from the Faculty of Veterinary Science at Onderstepoort, near Pretoria. We are actively involved with the university lecturing both pre- and postgraduate veterinary students. In addition to consulting in Johannesburg and Pretoria, we hold referral clinics approximately every 3 months in Durban. We have also performed surgeries in Southern African countries such as Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia. We make regular consulting and surgery trips in The United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

We are involved with all aspects of veterinary ophthalmology and receive referrals from around Southern Africa for cataract surgery in cats, dogs, horses and wildlife.

Services offered at the Johannesburg Animal Eye Hospital

Specialised equipment is used to examine your animal’s eyes. The front of the eye is examined with a slitlamp biomicroscope. This instrument provides a very good light source as well as good magnification. The retina and optic disk are examined with both direct and indirect ophthalmoscopes. Other diagnostic procedures include tonometry to determine the pressure in the eye; gonioscopy to examine the drainage angle of the eye; cytology to examine conjunctival and corneal cells; Schirmer tear test to measure the tear production; and ophthalmic dyes to assess corneal integrity.

Ultrasonography enables the examiner to visualize structures both within and behind the eye. This is particularly important in ocular conditions that make ophthalmoscopic examination difficult and in cases where there is pathology behind the eye.

Electroretinography (ERG) allows one to measure the electrical activity within the retina and thereby assess it’s functional integrity. This procedure is performed on all our cataract patients to ensure normal retinal function before cataract surgery

The Johannesburg Animal Eye Hospital makes use of a nearby facility for all our magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This form of advanced imaging allows us to investigate problems such as tumours found behind the eyeball and within the brain.
