The internationally renowned Baker McVeigh equine clinics were founded in 1963 by Dr Brian Baker in Summerveld, in the heart of Kwa-Zulu Natal. • Consultation sessions are held twice a day on weekdays and Saturday mornings where patients are seen by appointment. This caters for preventative treatments like vaccinations and annual check-ups as well as treating sick pets.
• After hours veterinary care is always available as one of our vets is always on standby to assist with urgent medical matters and emergencies.
• To aid with diagnostics we have a fully equipped X-ray room and a state of the art ultrasound scanner.
• The prep room is where first aid and assessment happens to emergency cases. Pets scheduled for surgery are prepared, shaved and anaesthetized before going into the operating theatre.
• Surgery done in the sterile operating room includes standard operations like spays, neuters and caesarians. Our surgery is also equipped for any other type of procedure your pet might need to get him back to health.
• While in our care patients stay in safe, comfortable kennels that are kept clean at all times. The surroundings and constant care are conducive to a quick recovery, so that your pet can be reunited with you as speedily as possible.
• Patients with infectious diseases deserve medical treatment as much as any other and to protect all our patients, we have an isolation ward to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
  We also offer a service to the community by treating free of charge any wildlife that may be brought to us sick or injured, e.g. wildlife caught in snares or hit by cars.

Dr Estèe qualified at Onderstepoort in 2010. She worked in mixed animal practise in Brits until 2014 – where she gained a large amount of surgical experience; mainly because there were no referral centres close by! She also got to work with a very wide variety of species, but her favourite still remains dogs and cats. She got married in 2014 and moved to Pietermaritzburg with her husband, Chrisjan – an accountant, and her shadow, Trix – a miniature schnauzer. “It’s a blessing to be able to do what you love every day, and then get paid to do it! “

As a new graduate with no job prospects, the opportunity to purchase this ailing clinic was a gamble for Dr Ramona Rambally.

Fortunately the previous owner had left behind 3 exceptionally well trained staff, with the right attitude, to make the practise grow into what it is today.
From humble beginnings in a little basement shop, to a warehouse, to the property that stands today, the wonderful community has played an important role in our development.

In return, the growing number of staff have committed to practising the very latest medicine and health care by attending progressive lectures and management courses. We are striving to always provide the best we can, in terms of technology, by offering clients digital radiography facilities and in house laboratory equipment.

The needs of the community are constantly changing.  This means that we’ve had to adapt accordingly; by increasing the business hours, by providing mobile and transport services, and offering an increasing number of services ranging from boarding to grooming.

Receptionists are trained to help clients with dietary advice, pet behaviour and training, general husbandry queries and often as a shoulder to cry on when a beloved pet dies or is euthanazed.
