The hospital was first bought by Dr Ted Jacobs in 1992, whose commitment to high standards of veterinary care, and hard work grew it from a one-man practice to a thriving four-man animal hospital. Multiple renovations, as well as costly medical equipment bear testimony to Dr Jacobs’ investment in the betterment of Brackenhurst Veterinary Hospital.

In 2015 the practice was bought by Dr Dabrowski and Dr Bholla, who continue the legacy of veterinary excellence. The hospital now boasts state of the art equipment such as ultrasound, endoscopes, digital x-rays, a blood laboratory, and cardiac and blood pressure monitoring machines.

Brackenhurst Vetetrinary Hospital boasts the facilities and expertise to treat most illnesses in dogs and cats, and tend to most surgical cases that we encounter. Our collective expertise ensures accurate diagnoses and excellent patient care.

Advanced medical work ups

Diagnostic equipment at the practice includes microscopes, opthalmoscopes, centrifuges, a urine spectrometer, and tonometer; as well as specialized diagnostic equipment for advanced medical diagnostic work ups.

• Ultrasound (“sonar scanning”): a useful diagnostic imaging modality for assessing soft tissue.
• X-rays: we have a state of the art digital x-ray system and two x-ray machines.
• Endoscopes: these are fiber-optic instruments used to evaluate hollow organs or body cavities such as the gastro-intestinal tract and airway passages.
• Blood analysis machines: enable the team to evaluate various internal body functions efficiently.

Advanced Surgical Procedures

The practice has the facilities and expertise to perform advanced soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery:

• Anaesthetic Monitoring: using advanced anaesthetic monitoring equipment, the team is able to simultaneously monitor blood operations.
• Theater: our well-equipped theater enables sterile procedures.
• Advanced orthopaedic procedures: they include complex fracture repairs, hip and elbow dysplasia surgeries, cruciate ligament repairs, and spinal decompression surgeries.
• Advanced soft tissue surgery: procedures include elongated soft palate resections, urethrostomies, diaphragmatic hernia repairs, and gastropexies.

House calls

We accommodate clients who have multiple pets requiring medical care, are unable to bring a pet into the practice, or would rather have their pet seen to at home.

Facilities

• Kennels: the practice has two indoor areas for kennels – to place patients carrying potentially contagious diseases in isolation; and for surgical and non-contagious patients. And our outdoor kennel area is used mostly for patients boarding for extended periods.
• Pharmacy: an in-house pharmacy ensures a constant supply of medication for our patients.
• Retail: the retail section stocks a wide range of dog, cat and parrot food (including Royal Canin, Acana, Origen, Eukanuba, Iams, Hills, Vets Choice, Ultradog and Maxhealth).

About Margate Veterinary Hospital

The Margate Veterinary Hospital opened its doors in 1980, and moved to the current premises in 1998, when additions and modifications to an existing house resulted in a brand-new, modern well-equipped pet care facility for the Margate community.

Under the management of Dr Leon Brüggemann, this clinic is efficiently run by a team consisting of veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurse, receptionists, kennel-orderly and cleaning staff.

Daily consultations on weekdays and Saturday mornings take care of sick pets, annual health checks and vaccinations. On most weekdays operations are done to repair injuries, sterilize or treat sick animals.

After hours animal care is supplied by a vet on standby and Sunday Morning consult hour for emergencies.

To offer a complete animal health care service we also have a Vetshop where we sell specialized pet food, tick & flea control and accessories like treats, toys, collars, harnesses and leads.

This practice has received numerous awards over the years, one being “finalist for the most cat-friendly South African vet practice”.

Our veterinary hospital offers the following clinical services:

Two consult sessions per day on Monday to Friday and one session on Saturday mornings during which time we see patients per appointment for all types of ailments or injuries as well as preventative treatment like annual check-ups and vaccinations.

After hours veterinary care is always available as one of our vets is always on standby to assist with urgent medical matters and emergencies.

We have a fully equipped X-ray room and ultrasound scanner to aid with diagnostics.

Our operating theatre is fully equipped to handle standard operations like sterilizations as well as most emergency trauma cases. Dr Brüggemann is experienced in doing the more complicated procedures like orthopaedic and spinal operations.

Our kennels are modern, safe, comfortable and easy to clean. Pets can relax under constant supervision and recover speedily to go home to their owners. Our special stainless steel cages are hygienic and suitable for either cats or birds.

We also offer a service to the community by treating free of charge any wildlife that may be brought to us sick or injured, e.g. wildlife caught in snares or hit by cars. Animals that can be cured are treated and sent to “Cragsview” where they can recuperate and are then released to have another chance at a free existence.
