Services offered at Endumeni Herd Health Practice
SYNCHRONISATION & FIXED TIME AI
We offer both synchronization programs as well as artificial insemination (AI) in cows and heifers. Synchronisation assists with tightening up the breeding season as 50% of the animals will be pregnant on the first day of the breeding season. This has lots of very positive knock on effects including rapid herd improvement due to the use of superior bulls, higher weaning weights and easier management.
AI can be done with either frozen or fresh semen. This enables you to get a large number of calves from a specific bull in a single year. This aids greatly in herd improvement and more effectively distributes genetics of superior and more expensive bulls.
BULL TESTING
We do breeding soundness examinations on bulls. This includes
collecting & evaluating the quality of the semen & testing for
reproductive diseases such as Trichomonas & Vibriosis. Unsound
bulls have a major negative impact, financially & reproductively on your breeding herd.
SEMEN FREEZING
We are able to freeze and store semen. Freezing semen enables you to guard against the loss of a good bull out of your herd due to an unexpected death.
It acts as a good insurance policy for new and high priced bulls as you can continue using a good quality bull’s semen long after he has died.
PREGNANCY DIAGNOSIS (PD’s)
We offer pregnancy diagnosis on heifers & cows. The ideal time to test is 6 weeks after breeding season. By knowing the pregnancy status of your herd you can plan fodder flow to meet the nutritional requirements of the herd & you can sell or cull problem animals that are sub-fertile.
SMALL STOCK
We do a fair amount of sheep and goat work in our area. This includes scanning for pregnancy, Ram breeding soundness exams and teaser rams.
The optimal time to detect twin pregnancies is between 6 weeks and 3 months gestation.
HORSES
We offer a range of equine services including castrations, vaccinations, basic pre-purchase examinations, testing for CEM and general emergencies. The ideal time to vaccinate against African Horse Sickness is between June & October.
EMERGENCIES
We aim to attend to any emergency in the shortest time possible. These include calving’s, prolapses, displaced abomasum’s, minor surgeries and post mortems to name just a few.
