There aren’t a lot of dogs that love cats, but the good news is that it IS a possibility to have dogs and cats living in the same house. In general, the lower-energy, laidback dog breeds do better with cats than the high-energy breeds with lots of prey drive and instinct to chase. Here’s a look at which dogs you might want to consider if you’ve already got cats:

Dogs that love cats

Beagle

Beagles are scent hounds, which means they use their sense of smell to sniff out prey. Traditionally, these dogs would hunt in large packs, so it was super important for them to get along with their pack mates. Because the Beagle is gregarious and congenial, most of them will happily live with other animals.

Basset

More often than not, Bassets are dogs that love cats, and any other animal they consider part of their pack. The Basset is a scent hound, just like the Beagle, and they’re super friendly and amicable. These slow-moving dogs have all the traits necessary for living with cats.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

As part of the American Kennel Club Toy Group, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was bred to be a loving, loyal lap dog and companion. The Cavalier is a real sweetie pie and will get along with almost every person an animal it meets, including cats.

Collie

Collies love to love, and if you’ve ever seen Lassie, you’d know that. Most herding breeds don’t do well with cats, but the Collie is mellower than most other herding breeds. Collies are very gentle with kids and most other family pets, even those from a feline descent.

Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever is one of the world’s most popular breeds, and with good reason. These dogs are real ladies or gentlemen and their good manners don’t just extend to people, but to other animals too. Golden Retrievers and sweet-natured, gentle, and very loving.

Pomeranian

Although Pomeranians and engaging and spirited little dogs, these fluffy Toy Group dogs are seldom a threat to cats, which almost always tower over Pomeranians. In general, the Pomeranian tends to live peacefully with other animals, including cats.

Pug

The Pug is a charming and generally happy little chap that’ll get along with almost anyone. Most Pugs don’t want to chase or bother their feline brothers and sisters, so they can live successfully with felines as long as they’re introduced properly.
